After taking care of my dog and pouring a wee nip, start hearing some sort of diatribe directed towards Tiger by some guy named John Hawkins, aka...the Hawk.

Hawk? Well the only golfing Hawk I know of was a guy named Ben Hogan. John Hawkins, are you kidding me? Thank the golfing Gods that Paul Goydos was on.set to get the discussion back on solid ground. It sort of reminded me of an old episode of Kudlow and Cramer.

So here's my beef, Hawkins. You really don't expect Tiger to be all warm and fuzzy in the press tent, do you? Do you really expect to sit down and have a Goose.on.the.rocks with Tiger and have him tell you how he really feels? No, not gonna' happen with you or anyone else in your camp. Not any more.

So Tiger didn't give you guys much in the press tent. The way you were ranting about him you would've thought he stepped on your toe, literally, on the way out of the tent and failed to say 'pardon me.'

Your concern, Hawkins, seemed to be that when asked what specifically Tiger is working on with his swing recently, as well as any equipment change he may have made, Tiger simply replied that he and coach Foley are working on the same things they have been working on for a while. You have a problem with that, Hawkins? Do you really believe one of the greatest golfers is going to tell the media what specifically he is working on with his swing, considering the way he has played of late?

I don't think so...and don't take it so personally, Hawkins.

He did explain his equipment changes right down to the brand of shaft he changed to in his driver, and which putter he's playing with. That's pretty good stuff.

The reality is that Tiger is working on big stuff with his swing. Just take a look at his swing now versus his swing back in 2000, and you can see what he's trying to do, and at the same time sense the frustration in the time it's taking him to get back to top form.

Personally, I think his current coach is trying to erase the memory of former coach Hank Haney and that is one tall order. But I digress...

The reality is that Tiger is searching...searching for a golf swing that works for him...now. One that will work with his knee and other health issues, which I don't think he has fully healed from. I see it in his gait. Kind of like a horse owner glancing at one of their horses and knowing it has is a problem. His swing is changing, however, for better or worse.

For the press and media, and to you, John Hawkins, be happy with what Tiger gives you in the press tent. It's a heck of a lot more than Hogan gave you in his heyday. Same with Nicklaus. And far more eloquent.

Golf is a game to be enjoyed. Especially professional golf. Don't spoil it for us, John Hawkins, and Brandel Chamblee. The latter of the two proceeded to rake Tiger over the coals immediately following on Golf Central. C'mon guys, grow up. You should be thanking Tiger that you have great jobs on the Golf Channel, not scolding him.

Ok, my rant is over...for now.

British Open Winner, Louis Oosthuizen: A True Champion of the Inner Game

by Jon Leland

Some thought it was boring to see a little known pro win The Open Championship by seven strokes. And it didn't take long for the 54-hole leader, a young, long-hitting and seemingly unflappable Dustin Johnson, who by the way has won at Pebble twice before, to crash and burn early in the round. Yet Johnson could have made a late move and contended in the end after somewhat righting the ship after his three hole disaster early in the round. Four more bogeys on the back nine squelched those notions, however.

Woods was there to try to wrangle destiny, but made too many mistakes and far too few putts to have a realistic chance to win his 15th major, after his own crash and burn late last year. In fact, I am sure this one will sting more than just a little for Tiger, as he could have really stolen the show had he played halfway decent in the final round.

Phil Mickelson was there as well, in position to win yet another major. But mistakes early and gambling and losing on his way in dashed his chances. He finished tied for fourth with Tiger.

The real story that got away was the Frenchman, Gregory Havret, ranked 391st in the world, losing by one stroke to the 30-year old McDowell. Maybe it's been 40 years since a European player has won a US Open, but it has been over a hundred years since a Frenchman has won the US Title. Havret with his simple but polished swing and a hot putter, played brilliantly all week, but bogeyed the difficult 17th and failed to birdie the vulnerable 18th to finish one behind.

In the end, McDowell proved to be a worthy if not surprising champion. He played 4 days of steady golf, and you need to be steady to win a US Open. That and nerves of steel with a pint of good putting on some rough and tough greens.

I suspect there will be a few less pints of Guinness in the kegs of Northern Ireland this morning...and maybe in Monterey as well.

Rick Rider is publisher of Sierra Golfer Digital Network and can be reached at rick@sierragolfer.com.

Haney resigns from Team Tiger?

by Rick Rider

Well, I cannot believe it.

It's finally happened. Tiger's pseudo-coach Hank Haney resigns from Team Tiger after a half-dozen or so years with Tiger.

Tiger, thanks for listening. You won't regret it.

I'll never forget the day I heard that Tiger left Butch Harmon and then subsequently found out that Tiger was working with Hank Haney from McKinney, Texas, my old stomping grounds.

I couldn't believe it. After all, Hank's only claim to fame, as far as I was concerned was that he coached a guy named Mark O'Meara; no disrespect intended Mark.

Seriously, Tiger could have taught Hank nine different ways to coach and play golf.

Furthermore, I will agree with a certain golf commentator, that Tiger won many of his tournaments during 'The Haney Years' despite working with Haney as opposed to 'because of'...

Nevertheless I will stand by my theory that this was nothing more than a 6 year experiment with the sole purpose being Tiger wanting to learn the Ben Hogan golf swing, and as far as I'm concerned, this chapter in the life and saga that is Tiger Woods is closed. Over.

I don't even care if Hank resigned or Tiger let Hank go. It doesn't matter. Hank's gone. Good riddance.

It's time to move on Tiger. Find a new coach. You have my # in case you need some original advice. Besides, your swing has always been better than Mr. Hogan's.

Take some time off. Get ready for the US Open and the rest of the majors...and that's it for 2010.

Oh, Tiger, one more thing. Hogan did know how to handle the golfing press. And Tiger, if you are listening, feel free to give me a call.

By most standards Tiger played pretty well at his first competitive tournament in after 5 months of his layoff. By most standards.

But not by his standards, I can tell you for sure.

Thursday's round was his best with an opening 68, and Friday's was acceptable as he made 3 birdies and a lone bogey at the tough par 3 4th. Nice start Tiger. 138 strokes over the first 2 rounds.

So as we prepare for the weekend of our favorite first Major of the year, most could see that Tiger was preparing to pull off a miracle of sorts.

Then came Saturday...moving day as Tiger would say.

Tiger had 7 birdies and 5 bogeys. Yes, that's right, 5 bogeys. Not exactly Tiger-like. Still Tiger was in contention.

Then came the debacle that was Sunday's round. Actually a 69 in most books is a nice round, especially if in a major championship...especially on Masters Sunday. However, it's not good enough to win a major against an inspired and driven Phil Mickelson. He played like a champ over the weekend...and Tiger did not.

So why do I rehash this now? Simple. Tiger needs some real help with his swing, and here goes mine.

Tiger, you constantly complain about sticking the club behind you on the downswing.

Hank, why can't you fix that? With all the cameras and software you have in your swing dungeon?

Well, I wouldn't expect Hank to listen; but Tiger, you should. You've got the second part of Hogan's swing mastered, but you are missing the most important part...the beginning.

In fact, let's leave Hogan out of it and look at all the great swings of the past. The greats all started the backswing with their hips. The modern swing all the modern gurus teach omits this crucial swing element.

"Turn back against a quiet lower half," they preach. Well, just like on Mythbusters, I am busting this philosophy.

Ok, so don't go as far back as Bobby Jones, maybe, as he did play in a different era, historically. But man could he play, and use his hips on every swing...properly. And I am sure someone will rightfully mention that the equipment is different today.

Exactly...the balls fly further and stop quicker today.

Just take a look at Palmer, Nicklaus, Watson, Miller, and even Snead and the aforementioned Mr. Hogan. They all used their hips to power the swing and set the club for the downswing.

What is being taught today is a modern power swing that takes the onus off the Instructors' balance sheet, and places the responsibility squarely on the shoulders of the player. It's a cop-out, and is no longer a valid teaching method. Furthermore, this method does not have any basis or credibility by historical means.

If you turn the club back with only the upper torso and leave the hips behind, only to drive the hips on the downswing, there's where you get disconnected. That's how you stick the club behind you and block the ball 30 yards right.

Tiger, I know you have a lot of dinero invested in Hank, but do yourself a favor and get a second and third opinion. If not from me, then maybe your old coach Butch.

I'm sure he would have an original thought.

Rick Rider is publisher of Sierra Golfer Digital Network and can be reached by email at rick@sierragolfer.com.

Masters Sunday always bigger than Super Bowl Sunday

by Rick Rider

In my world anyway. And I will always remember the Masters Sundays I spent with my old friends back in Texas.

Invariably we would gather at the house of my very dear friend Matt, aka the Golf Doctor, on Masters Sunday. I'm sure we played our weekly round on Saturday instead of Sunday this week, because of Masters Sunday.

There would be a few other friends there, but it was always me and Matt, cheering on our favorite golfers of the day. His were always mine, btw, for some unknown reason, because we tended to disagree on a variety of other issues.

Not golf though...and not major champions.

For the longest time our champion was Tom Watson, and he was a worthy champion albeit a heartbreaking one at times.

Then Faldo came along and made us happy campers for over a decade with his amazing ball-striking and on-course management.

And of course now with Tiger. For over a decade Matt and I would never miss a Championship Sunday where Tiger was contending. From Tiger's record-breaking win at the Masters in 1997 and every major after, we were somewhere, his or my house sharing a snack and a cold beverage rooting Tiger on.

I believe now that it wasn't just Tiger's playing ability and charisma that drew us to Tiger so profoundly.

You see, Matt and I were golf historians as well as golf professionals, and we knew the implications of who Tiger was early on in his career, even before he turned pro in 1996.

Yes, we knew in our hearts that some day soon we would see the history books rewritten by this Tiger Woods. Unfortunately, Matty won't be there with me, or maybe he is watching with my brother on a comfy sofa in the great clubhouse in the sky, watching from the skybox.

Either way Matty, there will be plenty of time for us to visit about Tiger down the road.

In the meantime, buddy, I'll pop a frosty one as Tiger walks up the 18th today and toast to you my friend. Wish you could be here with me.

Rick Rider is publisher of Sierra Golfer Digital Network and can be reached at rick@sierragolfer.com

Yep, It Was a Fabulous Day For Golf

by Rick Rider

For myself, the Masters Tournament generally signals the beginning of the golf season, either on the PGA Tour or at our home course. It is also a great tournament to watch and be involved in.

But who could have scripted the first round yesterday that saw a 50-year old Freddy Couples in the lead, a 60-year old Tom Watson one stroke back, and Tiger Woods one behind him?

Well, I'll save the third story for later...for now I will roll around in the first two.

Freddy's 66 may have surprised everyone as it was his lowest round in over 25 years playing the Masters. He won the Masters back in 1992.

But don't think that Freddy can't compete with the young'uns just because he just turned 50.

Fifty is the new 40 right...I'm hoping so as the author just turned 50 himself.

If Freddy can keep the putter rolling he will most definitely be a factor and we couldn't have a better story if he were to nab one last green jacket on Sunday.

But I have to retract a bit when I say that I personally am scripting a better story. This one goes like this...

Watson beats Tiger in a playoff...oh if this were to happen, how the last 20 years of my rooting for Tom at the Masters would be the ultimate exoneration, and for Tom after last year's heartbreaking loss at the Open Championship.

Yep, that would be the story for me. On the other hand, many know how entrenched I am in the Tiger world, and how I am watching every step into golf history.

The reality of this Masters will be evident in a few short days, and although either of the first two scenarios would delight this golf fan, I'm afraid those stories are quite the longshot.

For yesterday, Augusta National was truly amenable in its opposition to low scoring.

As surely as I sit here, the course will quicken and the test will get tougher for all the players.

This will surely help Watson and Couples as Augusta National has become a bear of a course when they stretch it out. But hitting it long is one thing...hitting these greens when the course quickens or the wind comes up is something else altogether.

In the end, good putting or bad will decide this Masters.

Still...I'm rootin' for you Tom. Grab a Tiger by his tail, and teach him a lesson.

That's my heart talkin'. My head says Tiger is back, and no one can stop him now.

Rick Rider is publisher of Sierra Golfer Digital Network, and can be reached at rick@sierragolfer.com

What would I say to Tiger Woods if he wanted some help before The Masters?

by Rick Rider

Today is another great day for Tiger Woods, among many less than great days he has spent in the last 5 months.

As far as I'm concerned, now it's time to get back to the business of winning golf championships.

There were plenty of pointed questions starting at 2:02 eastern time today and Tiger handled them all with sincerity and dignity, and without a hint of contempt or defiance.

Nope, the real Tiger Woods showed up today at his first press conference since his mishap last fall and the revelations that would and will change his life forever.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_uHjN4pFuFi4/S7vOdL3SnTI/AAAAAAAAAEs/N7afvv0a77A/s1600/Tiger_press_conference.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; Tiger also apologized to his fellow players in a way that should satisfy them as well.

The most important part of the conference today in my opinion was regarding his family and more specifically, his kids. Simply put, Tiger acknowledged that winning championships were secondary to the importance of living a life of dignity and being a great father to his kids.
That's the lesson his dad taught him years ago and it's good to hear Tiger acknowledge this again. It's plain to see that Tiger misses his dad.

Tiger also revealed that his on-course actions are going to change a bit, whereby he will be less exuberant on great shots and also less scornful on the bad shots. Sort of a more even-keeled type of behavior that may or may not be good for his game. Time will tell.

Personally I think this is a good thing. And I also think the real Tiger is back...for good.

Rick Rider is publisher of Sierra Golfer Magazine and can be reached at rick@sierragolfer.com.

Wonder What Tiger is Up To Right Now?

by Rick Rider

As I was planning my Masters viewing schedule for next week, something occurred to me, and not without a little contemplation.

It occurred to me that not only are we all going to be able to watch Tiger play golf again real soon, but that we will see a new Tiger on the course.

I'm not talking about a brand new Tiger with some sort of new golf swing, but a revitalized and energized Tiger who in my humble opinion, will not bear much rustiness, as is the speculation among the very knowledgeable and concerned press corps.

In case you are wondering how Tiger will look and more importantly how he will play at the Masters next week after a 3 month hiatus from professional golf...well wonder no further.

For those of you who are interested, and I know that a lot of you are, don't worry about Tiger. I can tell you that Tiger has not just been rehabilitating the last 3 months, exclusively. Nor has he been entertaining much.

What he has been doing is preparing for what is certainly the biggest tournament in his comeback; I don't like using that word; and quite possibly his career.

So what's Tiger been up to? Hitting a lot of practice balls, just like he did as a kid, that's what. Tiger's spent more time practicing than he has in 20 years or so. That's what Tiger loves to do. In fact I'm sure he's worn out plenty of calfskin and even some chrome right in the middle of all of his clubfaces in the last 3 months.

Will he be prepared mentally? Are you kidding. He is the best golf mentalist the game has ever seen, and that comes naturally to him. No disrespect to you Jack.

One thing is for sure. Tiger understands the importance of the moment. And the moment is pretty near.

Do yourself a favor and enjoy Tiger v2.0 next week. You won't be disappointed.

Rick Rider is the publisher of Sierra Golfer Digital Network, and can be reached at rick@sierragolfer.com.

Tiger's Coming Back. Here is a guy who's calculated everything in his life right down to what socks he wears, and how tight his shoelaces are on any given day. Seemingly.

So it surprised me when Tiger stated at this very small press conference that he, and I will paraphrase, looks forward to playing golf again sometime soon...maybe even this year.

So the goofy press, and even my friend Nick Faldo was quite stunned that Tiger didn't seem to know when he would return to professional golf.

Would we ever see Tiger play again?

I knew different. There was no question in my mind that Tiger would never skip the Masters Tournament in April. That was his first major win as a pro back in 1997.

And Tiger holds a certain reverence for the hallowed fairways of Augusta National GC.
He also knows that the Augusta National Golf Club has a certain reverence for him, although he would never point that out.

The point is, what's done is done. It's time for Tiger to move on.

And what better venue than at the Masters.

I would make the very same decision. I would also have been hitting 2 thousand golf balls a day, half of them on and around the practice green.

I would also be in the best physical shape of my life when I did return.

As for the extraneous press corps, don't expect much from Tiger for a while.

After all, making history will require all of his attention. Perhaps in a way that was similar to a certain Ben Hogan in his day.

Yep, it's gonna' be all business from here on out for Tiger Woods.

Rick Rider is publisher of the Sierra Golfer Digital Network, and can be reached at rick@sierragolfer.com.

SHARPER FOCUS

March 8, 2010

PLUNK! “He really was focused on that putt.”

You hear golf commentators say this all the time, but did you ever wonder how you can improve your own focus and concentration? Since it can really help your golf game, here are some ways to improve those skills — off the course.

Next time you’re having a conversation in a crowded restaurant or a noisy bar, concentrate only on the other person’s voice. To do this, you have to screen out dozens of other sounds. You’ll find that your attention will probably drift to those distractions and then back to the person you’re with. However, the more you want to listen to your companion (remember your first date?), the more intensely focused you’ll be and the longer you’ll be able to sustain that concentration.

As a drill, shift your attention to hear a different conversation from across the room. We all can do it. If someone over there mentions our name, our attention can snap into that conversation in a nanosecond. This focusing ability is so powerful, it’s been studied and is called “The Cocktail Party Effect.”

Now snap your focus and concentration back to the person next to you.

For a visual drill, try this: in your next one-on-one conversation, see if you can determine whether the other person’s left or right eye is dominant. (It’s the one they’re really focusing on you.) Now look only at that eye. Now shift your attention to their whole face. Now back to that dominant eye. You’re shifting and sharpening your focus.

If you practice this, when you get to the golf course, it will become easier and easier to focus on one grain of sand in the sand trap or one dimple on your golf ball.

Before you know it, you’ll be on autofocus.

Jennifer

Jennifer Scott, C.Ht.

Clinical Hypnotherapist

480 483 6941

http://ownthezonegolf.com

http://jscotthypnosis.com

http://facebook.com/JShypnosis

http://twitter.com/jscotthypnosis

http://linkedin.com/in/mindmender

You can reach Jennifer at jscott@ownthezonegolf.com

Persuade Yourself To Win

Did you know that you can persuade your Subconscious Mind that you’re a winner? (Unfortunately you can also persuade it the opposite.) This means that if your Subconscious believes the pitch you’re giving, it’ll work.

You see, your Subconscious accepts these affirmations when what you say or think produces no mental conflict.

For example, let’s say that you want to improve your game – to lower your handicap and play winning golf consistently. You want this. Really bad. But deep inside you have a gnawing doubt this could ever happen. Because “you’re not good enough.”

It happened to Paul Goydos in his first PGA Tournament. In his book, “A Good Walk Spoiled,” John Feinstein recounts how Goydos felt watching Payne Stewart hitting balls on the range. He thought, “Who is that guy? I’ve never seen him in my life [Payne wasn't wearing his trademark knickers] and I can’t come close to hitting the ball like that. If everyone out here is that good, I’ve got no chance. Absolutely no chance.”

He didn’t. He missed the cut “by a million.”

The point to keep in mind is that an Infinite Intelligence working within you 24/7 will find a way to accomplish your desires if you talk to yourself in the right way, with phrases that get accepted. And these phrases are more likely to be accepted when you’re sleepy, because your critical resistance is lowered.

Also keep in mind that when your desires and imagination are in conflict, your imagination usually wins.

(It’s how Hypnotherapists help their clients every day.) And these phrases are more likely to be accepted when you’re sleepy, because your critical resistance is lowered.

Also keep in mind that when your desires and imagination are in conflict, your imagination usually wins. I'm glad it finally happened although it hurt to see Tiger up there. The situation needed to be handled by Tiger and he handled it. It was quite a relief when he walked off the stage.

It's been over 3 months since we've seen or heard from Tiger, and today's press conference was handled with as much humility and contrition a man of his stature could muster up.

Though the whole 'Friday at the Tour Headquarters' statement seemed largely scripted, his words to me were genuine and heartfelt. How could it not be scripted, btw, with the complexity of the situation?

In fact, Tiger did and said exactly what he needed to to try to get his life; and golf game back on track. He admitted his guilt, apologized to his family, friends and business associates in a very public forum, and asked for forgiveness. What else could he do, except maybe have done this 2 months ago.

Tiger also apologized to his fans and his peers.

I for one was relieved when Tiger admitted that he behaved poorly on the course as well. That's been one of my beef's with him for years. The cussing and club~banging had to stop. That's how I will appraise Tiger's words today in action. I think it will stop, and the game will be better for it. Thanks again Tom.

The infidelity thing I really didn't want to know about anyway. To me that's between he and his wife. But he admitted it, said it was wrong and that he learned his lesson. I believe him.

The one missing element today, besides his wife Elin, was Tiger announcing when he was returning back to professional golf. I think he did this for good reason. Today was not about Tiger the golfer, but more about Tiger the man.

My humble opinion is that he will announce his return soon, and will return soon. Probably at the Masters in April. Will his wife be there with him when he does return? I don't know. Based on Elin's conspicuous absence at the conference today, I would suspect not...but what do I know.

Will his children and Mom forgive him? Darn right they will. That's what families do.

Will Tiger's fans forgive him? I don't know.

Will Tiger's peers forgive him? I don't really care. As for his sponsors? Who needs 'em.

Tiger was definitely out of his element today, however. Essentially apologizing to the world. Not letting his sticks do the talking , but a Tiger talking; explaining his personal life and pleading for forgiveness, at a place where he never wanted to be but indeed a place where he needed to be. Albeit a couple of months late.

Bottom line? Today was a good day for Tiger, and a good day for golf. And I believe him when he says his actions will match his words.

Now it's time to get on with the rebuilding of a Tiger. Tiger 2.0 if you will.

And I for one am rooting for him.

Now Tiger, get back to the course, where you are in your element.

Rick Rider is the publisher of Sierra Golfer Digital Network and can be reached at rick@sierragolfer.com

There will be no tears shed tomorrow...

by Rick Rider

...As an AP sportswriter suggested in an article about Tiger's scheduled news briefing on Friday.

See goofy story here.

Though there might ought to be. Tears can be very healthy. Not from a Tiger though.

I think his article went something like this...'Tiger doesn't understand he's not in charge'...and goes on to regurgitate the same blather that the press has been spewing for over 2 months now.

I loathe the press by the way in case you haven't noticed. Here's a newsflash for you Mr. Dahlberg...Tiger doesn't really care what you or any other media-like people have to say.

You're bothersome. Now go find somebody else to whip on.

Ok, I'm back now.

The reality is that Tiger is in complete control of what matters to him the most. Rewriting the golfing history books. It is what he was trained to do from day one.

Like it or not, that's the reality of the situation.

So he screwed up. Big time. Deal with it everybody. Life is painful sometimes. Now it's time to get back to the job at hand...rewriting golf history.

As for you Mr. Dahlberg and your goofy parasitic colleagues calling yourselves the news media, start looking for something else to write about. Your material is dated.

And if Tiger sheds a tear or two tomorrow, it will be for his late father, who passed several years ago.

Dad, I really need you right now...

Rick Rider is the publisher of Sierra Golfer Digital Network and can be reached at rick@sierragolfer.com

Tiger's Vanity Fair article no real revelation...

by Rick Rider

Ok, so I read the Vanity Fair article about Tiger Woods by some guy named Buzz Bissinger and didn't really learn anything at all except that somewhere along the way Mr. Bissinger must have been snubbed by Tiger. His tabloid-style article would have and should have landed in the Enquirer.
I really wouldn't be surprised if dimestore tabloids were Buzz's main gig. Heck, I even felt like I was blushing a time or two.
In what this writer and Vanity Fair most certainly considers the biggest story since OJ Simpson was seen driving down the freeway with his pal being chased by a slow procession of cop cars, turns out to be a tell-all Tiger-bashing that really was sort of an embarassment to me as a journalist.
Seriously Buzz, you don't really consider this journalism, 'cause it don't look like journalism to me. To me you resemble the last man on a huge dogpile proclaiming to be the king of the written word. Psyche.
I really don't want to bore my readers with this drivel, but I will comment on a few of his points.
Addressing his swirling question about when and if Tiger will return to golf, well my answer is soon, and with the singular purpose of winning every tournament he plays in, especially the Masters and majors.
Regarding Tiger's compartmentalizing of his two lives...is this so hard to understand, Buzz?
Tiger is the best golfer of our time and also the best at projecting a personae. Efficiency and courtesy with the press was among one of his many talents.
Finally, professing his false character to garner more $$$? Please. Seems to me he was just being grateful and respectful of all the bags of money being thrown at him.
BTW, the Tiger Woods Foundation has impacted over 10 million young people since its inception in 1996. How about you Buzz, or Vanity Fair...how much $$$ did you all donate to needy causes last year, or any year?
My bottom line is...did he make a mistake? Yes. Do we all make mistakes? Yes. Because he is a role model, are his mistakes more profound than most? Maybe.
I personally cannot wait for Tiger to return to professional golf. As for the press, good luck getting an interview with him.

Rick Rider is publisher of Sierra Golfer Digital Network and can be reached at rick@sierragolfer.com

Is Tiger's family life off limits?

by Rick Rider

I got a call last Friday morning as I was busy working off a fabulous Turkey Day.

The call was from my golfing buddy in Texas telling me that Tiger Woods was in a car accident the night before in the wee hours of the morning and was reported in serious condition.

My God, I thought. I hope he will be alright.

As I started my own fact gathering and cyber-vigil, it became quickly apparent that Tiger would indeed be okay, as he was released from the hospital with minor injuries.

What a relief, I thought to myself...for Tiger and his family.

What followed after that was nothing less than a circus side show put on by the same media types that have been working so diligently at keeping anyone who is listening either riveted to the TV, or just wishing they would all shut up.

Speculation, innuendo and outright goofiness seems to be the order of the day, once again.

Tiger then made a brief but to the point statement that he was OK and that the media should let him take care of his personal issues.

Fair enough, I thought. Tiger has earned that right.

However, some think Tiger is hiding something and covering something up...that he owes us an explanation.

Others are just glad Tiger wasn't really hurt and realize that he is human after all, and that his family life is just as private as yours or mine.

So for those who think Tiger owes us an explanation, I say...step off, take a look in the mirror and think again.

The only rationalization that I have heard from these people that is even close to making any sense is this...

As a public figure who has earned many $$$ on his squeaky clean reputation, Tiger does owe us all an explanation.

I say...balderdash.

Tiger didn't ask for the money or fame...we, you and I thrust it upon him.

As for giving us all an explanation about his personal family life, I don't need one.
For those of you who do, again I say walk back over to that mirror and see if you are 100% satisfied.

Everyone makes mistakes. It's human nature.

Tiger owes us nothing more than playing his best golf at any given time. That's how I got to know him.

How about you?

Rick Rider is publisher of Sierra Golf Digital Network and can be reached at rick@sierragolfer.com

Wie pulls out this week after first win

by Rick Rider

Michele, can we have a word...

Why are you playing this week?

There are policies in place to help out ailing golfers on tour, and you should have invoked the injured player policy after winning last week, and obviously hurting this week.

It was painfully obvious after watching you play yesterday that you ought to think things through a bit more, or ask for some guidance when guidance is needed.

To wit...

You won last week for the first time in your career.

It's been a long time a'coming.

You are obviously having ankle issues, even before the start of this week's tournament in Texas. Why jeopardize that euphoria that is so important in golf after your first win?

What a way to finish a year, with your first victory under your belt...last week.

Timing is everything in golf and life.

I am talking about Michele Wie and her first victory as a pro on the LPGA Tour.

It's not as if the LPGA hasn't had its share of quality golfers emerge recently, as the reigning queen of the LPGA, Annika Sorenstam steps away from the game.

However, there has been a huge monkey on the back of the LPGA for some time now and thankfully, that thorn can be yanked out now that Michele Wie, the supposed heir-apparant to Annika has won for the first time in her well-publicized career.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; In fact, that was my beef for the longest time, and I must say this beef was shared with not just a few of golf's insiders.

Will Michele break out now and become the golfer we all expected to see many months ago and win and dominate like Tiger has done on the men's Tour?

One thing is for sure...even if she doesn't, Women's golf has never sighed with such relief and as much gusto as it had yesterday...and today, with Wie's win at Lorena's Tourney yesterday.

I think just maybe Michele will finally find a home where she most desperately needed to find one...on the LPGA.

After she dominates the ladies tour as most of us expect, then maybe, just maybe, she can try to play with the men again.

Hopefully not anytime soon, though.

Congratulations, Michele. Now stay and play where you can do the most good for yourself and the LPGA.

Rick Rider is a former professional golfer and is Publisher of the Sierra Golfer Digital Network. Btw, Tiger won just about everything else in '09, including the Fedex Cup, Player of the year and so on.

Well, my friends, don't worry too much about Tiger. This year will simply go down in the books as a wake-up call for Tiger to get busy in 2010...and get back to winning majors.

Remember that he is only 34 years old, and is coming off major knee surgery less than 2 years ago. All is well now.

He has also seen the birth of his two children in the last couple of years as well, and most of us know how profound the wonders of childbirth can be.

So what about Tiger?

My opinion is that starting a family and being a great daddy has slowed Tiger a bit, but he wouldn't have it any other way. I assure you he is enjoying fatherhood a bit more than playing Championship golf.

But, alas, he is destined to be the greatest golfer of all-time, and the only way we can quantify this is by overall wins and especially major wins.

So by the end of the cyber-conversation with my golfing buddies, there were predictions ranging from no major wins in 2010...all the way to another bloke wanting some odds that Tiger will win all four majors in 2010.

Can a bloke come from Texas?

Rick Rider is publisher of Sierra Golfer Digital Network. Listen up.

Now I'm not talking to any of you golfers who may have some back trouble, or other ailments that limit your flexibility. This tip is for you average golfers who really never felt like you can finish very well and need more power in your shots.

I am going to come at this issue from two angles...one, for club aware players and the other for body aware players. Relative to these two approaches is whether you fight a hook or fade, or maybe neither.

There are really only two ways that I teach a more powerful swing and finishing it off, which are related, btw. A powerful swing always finishes well. Maybe not pretty...but accelerating to a good finish.

One is with the shoulders, and the other with the hips or lower body.

If you fight a fade or a slice, let's try this: Use your right shoulder to power your swing through impact.

Assuming you have good posture and can turn the club back with your torso and not your hands and arms, go ahead and use that right shoulder to drive the club down and through impact. You have to make sure and keep your spine angle constant, (read don't move head) or you may risk the dreaded over-the-top pull hook.

In this move, your hands and arms follow the shoulders, and the right shoulder will provide the power in the swing and allow you to hit the ball more solidly and powerfully...and also take the thinking out of swinging the club.

Conversely, if you are a hooker and still can't create a powerful swing and finish well, well then you have to get the lower more in the act. Again, we are assuming a proper stance and nice turning backswing that can create some torque for the all-important downswing.

In this case, you have to get the lower body starting the downswing first...not the hands-arms-shoulders. Hogan and Snead would sort of squat and move the hips forward as the first move down, and the hands and arms would follow in a whip-like effect that created a lot of power with not a lot of effort. Others like Nicklaus and Watson would plant their left heel, after letting it rise on the backswing, to trigger and start the downswing. Still others would use a shift of the hips forward to create that important downswing momentum.

Whichever technique you use; right shoulder if you are club/swing aware player or hips and legs if you are more body aware; make sure something other than your hands are creating power in the downswing. If you do, I promise you will hit the ball farther and will finish your swing with relative ease.

Rick Rider publishes Sierra Golfer Magazine and can be reached by email at rick@sierragolfer.com.

Really hit it straighter

by Rick Rider

Boy, there are plenty of things to talk about in the golf swing that help you hit the ball longer and straighter. There is an old or new idea on every corner.

However, there is one issue that may affect the direction of your shots more than any other swing thing.

Clubface position throughout the swing.

You see, how you swing the clubhead away from the ball and around your body will affect how the clubhead strikes the ball and in what direction the ball will fly.

Whereas the swing plane, or the imaginary plane or pane of glass if you can imagine; the arc of your swing creates as you view from behind; affects shot flight, the plane however really influences the relative height of your ball flight.

No question that plane and club motion are very closely related, but today we are talking clubhead.

The thing is we have to learn to keep or get the clubhead moving the right direction from start to finish. Sound tough? Not really. If you notice the picture at the right, please notice how the golfer has positioned the driver nicely at the top for his swing relative to his body. You could draw a line right across the clubface straight down to the ball, and that's where you want the club to be at the top, whether hitting an iron or wood or even the driver. If the club is shut or closed at the top; face of club pointing more skyward; you are likely to hit a hook or right to left shot, or just pull the ball left of your intended line. Conversely, if the clubhead is is open at the top, or toe pointing more to the ground, you are likely to hit a slice or a pushed-right shot.

So then how do we learn to swing the club so that we can get and keep the clubhead square throughout the swing and hit straighter shots? Well we may need some tools of the trade like tall mirrors or video cameras to check our clubhead position through the various positions in the swing and also check to see if our grips, or how we hold the club are affecting the clubhead position, but I have an easier way. How about we check one position before we swing and see if we can get the clubhead right here and I bet the rest will take care of itself.

Ok, we are in our stance and arms hanging down nicely with an iron in hand, let's swing the club back slowly until the club is about waist high, and parallel to the ground. At this point of the swing, about halfway back btw, the butt of the club should be pointing right down the target line, and the toe of the club should be pointing straight up to the sky. In other words, by this point the clubhead is perpendicular to the ground and square.

From here, all we have to do is finish our backswings and boom, we are there. Just swing the club from that point and we're likely to finish with a square clubhead at impact...and hit a straight shot.

Now while there is some opening and closing effects of the clubhead during the swing, (similar to the opening and shutting of a door), to get the club back to square, how 'bout first we learn how to get the club square going back, then we'll learn the rest.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;

'I'd like to create more spin on my chip shots; and on approaches to the green.'

Well, here's how you can create more spin and hit your approach shots more solidly approaching the pin.

To create spin on any shot, the ball must be struck with a descending blow. That means we have to hit down on the ball. How do we do that? By addressing the ball with our hands slightly forward by placing the ball a bit farther back in our stances. Also our hands are slightly ahead of the ball at address. These two critical moves help ensure a descending impact into the ball which will impart more backspin without any extra effort.

The second and most important step in hitting crisp and spinning short shots with control is how the clubhead moves through the shot at impact. The clubhead on any shot, but certainly on shorter shots, has to open and close on your natural swing plane. Sort of like a door opening and closing. As the club moves back, the clubhead opens, and as the clubhead moves down to impact, it will naturally close. This move is critical in short shots that require spin and finesse'. Email me for more detail here...

Lastly, we must keep our heads very still on approach shots that require precision and finesse'. Just like putts, we can't let our heads 'bob and weave' at all lest we risk the shots coming off like the rolling of dice.

Give these techniques a try, and practice them plenty and have some fun around the greens with more weapons in your quiver.

font-size: small;">x by some, but others would attest that not rushing the golf swing is the key to great golf.

If you pay attention to the great swings on tour and on the putting green; even chipping for that matter, you will notice some similarities between these great swings/golfers.

The last is at the finish of a swing, could be called posing.

Before the shot, great golfers are just calming theirselves, and visualizing the upcoming shot.

The pause at the top of the swing is to keep tempo and to let the lower half of the body get moving forward without a rush.

Chipping and putting require the same cadence/tempo/pauses.

Ever wonder why you miss those 3...4 footers with agonizing regularity? Well, learn to swing the putterhead with the same tempo and a lot of those will go in, just by not rushing the putting stroke.

Same with chipping...maybe more so. With most pitches and chips, map out the shot in your mind's eye, settle down over the shot, and swing the club like the pendulum on a metronome.

So get some real tempo in your game and watch your shots fly straighter and your scores come down.

Rick Rider can be reached at rick@sierragolfer.com

Key to hitting your drives long and straight

by Rick Rider

I guess if there is one golf question that comes up more often than any other it would be...'how do you hit the driver long and straight?' Or, 'I need to be more consistent with the driver.'

Well, hitting hundreds and thousands of balls on the range would be a start, but most of us don't have that kind of time.

My best advice to golfers of all skill levels is the simple notion that swinging hard with the driver is a bad start. Also gripping the club tightly is not a good idea either.

But you will invariably see golfers make these mistakes all the time.

Here is what you do to learn to hit the driver longer, straighter and more consistently.

Learn good posture and be in balance. Your feet should be about shoulder width and your weight should be over your ankles.

Relax your hands and arms...learn to grip the club lightly but in control...and maintain that same light pressure throughout the swing.

Achieve a powerful swing by turning the torso and shoulders and resist whacking the ball with your hands and arms.

Swing in balance. Learn to finish in the same position every time, and in good balance at the finish.

Figure these thing out and I guarantee you will hit longer straighter drives all the time.

Please email me with your questions...rick@sierragolfer.com

Those are very handy.

Whatever your marker of choice may be, here are some rules of the road, so to speak, that will help you play and handle your ball on the green like a pro…and may help your game also.

In golf there is nothing like hitting a nice approach shot right up onto the green, something like the way we designed the shot in our heads. After I have hit the green and am walking up to where my ball lays, I like to mark it right away with my quarter. I usually start my game with about 4 or 5 quarters, just in case I lose a couple on the occasional spot bet.

So I just slide my quarter right behind my ball, and either pick the ball right up or roll it away where I may scoop it up. Main thing is to get that coin down. Once you do that, you can do whatever you want to your ball, including tossing it into the pond and grabbing another out of your bag. Now on the course, your ball ought to be scuffed to take it out of play, but on the green, switch balls at will, unless you’re playing one of those tournaments.

I also mark right away so I can clean it up with my damp towel that I always have with me. Always a white towel and usually too big for the job, I always have that big white and wet towel handy. I hate putting with a dirty ball. It just doesn’t feel right.

So I’ve marked my ball and cleaned the dirt off of it, now I am sizing up the green, my putt, and my opponents’ putts, as we are usually playing a match.

You really want to be in control at this point, so you need to know who is away, who is putting next, and when to size up your putt. Usually you want to start sizing your putt up as soon as possible as you walk onto the green. You are trying to get a feel for the lay of the land, which way the sun sets, and how water may drain off the green. These things will give you a sense for the speed of your putt as well as the break. Speed is a bit more important, so pay attention.

You can walk around the green while others are putting, or preparing to putt, just be mindful of when they begin to address the ball, as you really ought to stand still at this point. I have known playing partners who continue to move around while I am putting; you know who you are; and that’s not cool. I let it go because we are always needling each other anyway…plus it really doesn’t bother me.

If you experience this a lot in your group and it does bother you, just back off, squat behind your ball and give the offender a quick glance. They will get the message. If you happen to be in a heated match, glance over and ask them politely to please stand still while you are putting. That’ll shake’em up…quite proper too, I might add.

So it’s your turn to putt, you’ve sized up your putt, have a feel for the speed and break, now it’s time to get busy. Approach your ball from behind, lay your clean ball down right in front of your coin, and gently pick up your coin. If you are disgusted at this stage of the round, you can flick your coin backwards with your index finger, but it’s really best to keep your cool.

If your ball has a line on it, there are cool implements for making lines btw, or your ball has arrows and you like to use them, place your ball with the lines or arrows on your putting line. This will help you putt and start your ball on your intended line. Hey, everything helps when it comes to putting. Furthermore, I will lean the arrows either forward or backwards, depending on the speed of the putt, as a reminder.

For example, if I have a pretty slow uphill putt, I will lay the arrows toward the back of the ball, as if to say to myself…ok, I’ve got to give this one a rap. Or, if I have a slippery downhiller, I will lean the arrow forward, sometimes almost out of sight, but still aiming them down the putting line. By having the arrows or lines toward the front, I’m reminding myself that all I have to do is get the ball rolling on the right line and it will make it to the hole.

Ok, then, make a good stroke and keep your head still and knock your putt right in. Well, if you happen to miss it, decide straightaway whether you will finish up the next putt, or wait…and announce it so to your fellow-competitors. Don’t be shy, it’s your turn still, you can do either. More often than not, I will wait, and say so and mark again, if I have more than a 2-footer. You hate missing those shorties. Sometimes if you stand over that shorty long enough, you playing partners will just give it to you, to keep the game moving. Not that I have tried this, or anything.

So be decisive, mark your ball properly, and make more putts. Remember too that a putt of any length is as important as any other shot on the course, including those big drives.

Ask the Golf Guy what ails your golf game...

Let us hear about your fondest or funniest golf story...
